Six people are now being held in connection with a massive drugs seizure off the coast of Cork.

2.25 tonnes of cocaine were recovered during a multi-agency operation this week.

A Joint Task Force featuring members of the Gardaí, Revenue Customs Service and Naval Service seized the suspected cocaine after detaining a cargo ship the MV Matthew which was believed to be involved in a multi million euro drug operation.

The vessel had travelled to Irish waters from South America via the Canary Islands and is understood to be linked to a trawler which got into difficulty off the Wexford coast on Sunday night.

The drugs haul is still being examined to determine its purity.

Three men, understood to have been on the MV Matthew when it was taken over by Irish authorities, have now been arrested and are being held at Garda stations in the southern region.

Separately, three men who were arrested in a related sting operation when the trawler ran aground remain in Garda custody in co Wexford .
