A commemoration ceremony will take place at the Garden of Remembrance, Ringfinnan near Kinsale at 2pm tomorrow afternoon to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Ringfinnan Garden of Remembrance was founded by the late Kathleen Murphy, who had worked as a nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York for over 30 years.
The Kinsale native created the garden on family land, planting 343 trees, each one bearing the name of a member of New York City Fire Department who gave their lives in the pursuit of saving others.
Vigil Horgan, the cousin of Kathleen Murphy told RedFM news that the Garden is dedicated to many Irish Firefighters:
"After 911 Kathleen telephoned me and she says we must do something to one of these firemen. A lot of them were of Irish are of Irish descent, they were the same people who'd marched down Fifth Avenue on St. Patrick's Day in 2001, and she felt it was essential that their memory would be honoured and recognised."
