Drug use has changed in recent months in Cork with the arrival of potent synthetic opiates and a big spike in overdoses
A feasibility study conducted by UCC examining the need for an injection facility in the city is due to be delivered by the end of next month
Calls have been made for the establishment of a "mobile" supervised injection centre for Cork which could be rolled out quickly
Speaking to RedFM News David Lane head of the HSE says the longer we wait the more people who are dying needlessly from overdoses
"We have a number of overdose deaths every year in terms of people who are taking very significant risks in terms of that kind of drug use. These lives are lives that can be saved. That is one of the significant priorities of developing a service like this - it keeps people alive"
