A very proud moment that's how Paul O'Donovan's mum described the gold medal that Team Ireland took home from the Olympics overnight

Skibbereen's Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy rowed across the finish line ahead of Germany and Italy in the men's lightweight double sculls in Tokyo to take home the gold medal.

Paul's mum Trish says she was thrilled with their performance and is really looking forward to welcoming them home in the next couple of days

They made history by being Ireland's first ever gold medal for rowing, and seventh overall.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM, Paul O'Donvan's mother Trish said the silver medal he and his brother Gary won in 2016 paved the way for the next generation of rowers - and laid the foundations for this morning's gold medal
