Affordable, purpose built student accommodation is urgently needed in Cork.
The call from UCC Student's Union president comes in the wake of a student survey which found housing was their most significant source of financial pressure.
Students say their housing costs continue to increase with rising rents which has forced many to return home and take on long commutes to college.
UCC SU President Katie Halpin-Hill told RedFM News colleges need to be given the tools to be build publicly owned accommodation for students:
"It's not a affordable for students. It's absolutely not. Which is why that needs to be led, I think from the top down, from the Government, providing universities with the tools to build their own publicly owned affordable and purpose built student accommodation for students."
