An anti-human trafficking campaigner says there could be as many as five-thousand victims of trafficking in Ireland.
Three men were arrested in Cork on Saturday in relation to the investigation into an alleged organised crime gang who are suspected of trafficking people into the country.
Victims of trafficking are often forced to work in agriculture, construction, the service industry and entertainment.
Speaking to RedFM News JP O’Sullivan from MECPATHS [PRON: Meck-Paths] says the numbers being reported are just the tip of the iceberg:
"One national statistics would estimate that we have between 40 and 45 victims per year being formally identified. Estimates are that we're everything from 40% below the actual reality. Our report just last month suggested that we have up to 5000 victims of trafficking in Ireland at any point in time, only 40 to 45 being identified every year."
