Specialist Gardaí and a forensic anthropologist have exhumed the body of "Baby John" -- whose killing sparked the infamous "Kerry Babies" case.

The infant boy was found stabbed to death in April 1984 on White Strand in Kenmare.

The exhumation is part of the fresh investigation launched three years ago, following the state apology to Joanne Hayes -- the woman wrongly accused of killing him.

Journalist Michael O'Regan says the murder changed Ireland -- but Baby John has still not had justice.

"It was in many respects a watershed in Irish society.

"That discovery led to a chain of events that really ignited a major debate in Irish society, and that debate went on for many years.

"It has been a source of distress that justice wasn't done.

"It may be that after all those years later, and all that trauma that it created for the Hayes family and indeed Irish society, that justice might be done."
