Leading disability organisations are calling for e-scooters to be banned on footpaths.
NCBI, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Irish Wheelchair Association are urging Transport Minister Eamon Ryan to protect pedestrians with access needs before it's too late.
Yesterday, the Minister unveiled his strategy for electric charging vehicle infrastructure which includes developing new mobility hubs where people can charge electric cars, bikes and scooters.
But the three charities say e-scooters should be banned on footpaths, have designated parking bays, reduced maximum speed limits, along with age restrictions and insurance cover.
NCBI Head of Advocacy June Tinsley says many of their service users have had issues with e-scooters.
"77% of people on the survey that we did reported an incident of a collision or near misses with e-scooters on the footpath.
'Largely individuals who are blind or visually impaired cannot see the e-scooters approaching, s we certainly would like an audio sound attached to e-scooters to assist with this."
