The Government has been called on to take immediate action in order to permanently solve the accommodation crisis facing refugees arriving from Ukraine.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says the Government must take swift action ensure they are provided with accommodation without delay.

The call comes as the Taoiseach said announced accommodation at Gormanston Camp in Co Meath will open on Monday for up to 200 refugees.

Enda O’Neill, Head of Office with UNHCR Ireland said the government must fast track measures aimed at dealing with the problem on a permanent basis.

"It's already government policy in the white paper on ending direct provision for the state to build or purchasing reception facilities or other forms of accommodation.

"We're calling on the Government to fast track those plans now and invest significantly in a modern protection system that is capable of responding appropriately to the needs of those coming here and seeking protection."
