Negative attitudes among Gardaí to ethnic minorities must be tackled, according to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

The watchdog is calling for State action on racial profiling when Gardaí stop and search people.

It says greater diversity among gardaí and other public sector workers is needed.

The body has made 130 recommendations for the new National Action Plan Against Racism.

Chief Commissioner Sinéad Gibney says there's a lack of data on Garda racial profiling.

"There are attitudinal issues among Garda members that we would like to see addressed.

"Unfortunately the data that we need to identify those issues is not readily available to us, so we cannot report the kind of attitudinal issues that we are concerned about until we have better data from the Gardai."
