There are calls for an investigation into the hacking of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Minister's phone.

Yesterday, Simon Coveney revealed he had been the victim of a hack, while answering questions around the now defunct appointment of Katherine Zappone to a UN Special Envoy role.

He said it was part of the reason he deleted texts between himself and Ms Zappone and himself and the Tanaiste - a decision the Taoiseach has described as not best practice.

Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon says the Foreign Affairs Committee needs to investigate the hack.

"I want to know now, and what I've written to Charlie Flanagan in his position as Foreign Affairs Committee Chair about, I want to understand when the Minister for Defence's phone was hacked, what information may have been obtained and who hacked the phone?

"This just came out in a very flippant manner - I think it's very significant and worthy of a more thorough investigation."
