A charity in the city says people are struggling to cope with the price of their weekly food shop.

Cork Penny Dinners expect more people to come to them for help this winter and say yesterday's budget isn't going to help anyone on a low income.

Minimum wage will rise to €12.70 but the charity say that's still not enough to meet the cost of rising bills, food and mortgage increases.

Speaking to RedFM News Caitriona Twomey of Cork Penny Dinners says the price of food must come down:

"If you go shopping Friday, it costs you €50, next week its going to cost you €53. So if you're not going to bring down things to a level that's suitable for people to get by. So they don't marry each other. They don't match up, they don't balance out. So with the increases in the budget, it still doesn't match what's going up."
