Childline receives five to ten contacts about rape from teenagers every week.

169 young people meanwhile have contacted the service about incest this year.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children says it receives 120-thousand contacts each year, and almost a quarter of them are classified as "level four" - the most concerning of contacts.

It says 26 every week are from children and young people in relation to child sexual abuse, while 1 to 3 contacts are about sexual exploitation.

169 young people contacted the ISPCC's Childline service in 2023 about incest, and it found 36 percent of sexual assaults were carried out by blood relatives of other household members.

According to the CSO Sexual Violence Survey 2022, 41 percent of respondents, aged 18-24, experienced sexual violence as a child.

Of those surveyed, 83 percent of victims knew the perpetrator.

The ISPCC says it'll be working hard to address these horrifying statistics over Christmas, and its 24/7 Childline listening service means there's always someone to listen.
