The Chief Executive of Cork City Council says work is being done to tackle the rise in crime and anti social behaviour in the city.

In recent months there have been increased reports of open drug dealing, shoplifting, thefts at knife point and organised begging.

Over the last year Cork had the highest level of detections for begging in the country with 173 arrests.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show City Council Chief Executive Ann Doherty says the authorities are targeting organised begging:

"We've had problems before with begging and we worked together to start to ensure that it's not attractive for professional beggars to be in our city. Prosecution is key, being unwelcome to professional beggars I think is really important. And I suppose most importantly for all of us, is not just supported by giving money."
