The vaccination programme is preventing over 13,000 cases of Covid-19 a week, according to the chief medical officer.

It comes as the highest number of cases in nearly seven months was reported yesterday, with 1,903 new infections.

207 Covid patients were in public hospitals last night, with 37 in ICU.

Dr Alan Gaffney, the vice-president of the Intensive Care Society, says the ICU figure is rising gradually.

"The total number of beds occupied by patients with Covid is increasing by about 1 or 2 a day.

"For example, during the last wave in the spring we saw a doubling of the amount of patients that required each week at one point, we're now seeing a doubling of patients about every six weeks.

"We're definitely seeing the numbers creep up, but we're not seeing anything like the numbers we did in the last wave."
