People have expressed concern regarding government proposals to introduce later opening hours for pubs and clubs.

Research by Alcohol Action Ireland, showed more than half of women are worried about on street violence..while 41 per cent are concerned about sexual violence.

67 per cent of people believe that such a move will have a potentially negative impact on Emergency Departments, ambulances, Gardaí, and transport.

CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland Dr. Sheila Gilheaney says the figures reinforce a litany of concerns relating to the proposals:

"Really, I suppose no surprise because even at the moment, we know that those services are stretched and we know that there is significant pressure on our ED's. So the idea of actually, increasing the amount of alcohol that could be consumed by increasing the availability offered to longer opening hours, is really no surprise that that is likely to cause concern with the public."
