Concerns have been expressed that new laws aimed at restricting XL Bully dogs will see them being kept behind closed doors

From October 1st, the breeding, rehoming, reselling and importing of the dogs will be banned completely.

Those already with the breed will need to get their dogs microchipped, neutered and registered by February 2025.

Speaking to RedFM News Vincent Cashman of the Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says owners face some serious decisions

"The problem we're going to have, which we can see as a problem going forward, is a lot of these dogs might be kept behind closed doors. They're not going to be socialised as they were, and then if these dogs get out, they're going to be more reactive. Sothink people who own these dogs are just going to have  take a breath, sit back and say, right, if I want to do it, we do it right. If we're not, then these animals would have to be put to sleep"
