40 per cent of younger drivers have admitted to checking social media apps while behind the wheel.

It comes as the new junior minister for transport raises serious concern about the number of people driving under the influence of cocaine.

A road safety campaign will be launched today ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

The number of road deaths has already surpassed 100 this year, with 13 deaths on Cork roads.

Minister of State, James Lawless, believes more aggressive behaviour on the roads and an increase in drug use is creating a dangerous cocktail;

"I think if you join the dots, it's not unreasonable to suggest that people are combining that sort of pent up frustration, that kind of post pandemic madness with a increase in drug use, particularly, cocaine, and that may be contributing to some of the aggressive, erratic, reckless, behaviours, we're seeing on the roads, and that's something I'm really concerned about".
