Crews are due to begin work on a €40 million project to resurface the main runway from tomorrow before the airport reopens on November 22nd.

The project was due to get underway at the end of next year, however management brought it forward to this year due to coincide with the dip in global aviation traffic caused by the pandemic.

Speaking to RedFM News, Kevin Cullinane from Cork Airport says closing the airport for the duration of the project will save a lot of time:

"We obviously witnessed decimation of our business as did every aviation sector. Last year we bought forward the investment to last year secured the funding initially, to be able to do it got government commitment in November of 10 million euro towards the project. So from the time of getting that funding to the time the project will be finished on the 22nd November's just 12 months, ordinarily, a project of this scale and complexity, would take two to three years.
