A Cork dairy farmer has expressed concern at the move by four supermarkets to cut the cost of their own brand butter from today.
The move comes after milk prices were cut by supermarkets last Friday, which farmers claim will threaten the viability of many dairy farmers.
CSO figures show butter production decreased in March, while there was a decline in domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers.
Alan Jagoe is a dairy farmer in Carrigaline he's now worried that the price of yogurt, cheese and other milk based products will also fall
Speaking to RedFM News he says dairy farmers are being squeezed by this supermarket price war.
"It's difficult for farmers to comprehend this, considering our input costs are at an all time high.
"Looking at the CSO figures, our input costs have increased by 50% over the last two years.
"That, coupled with falling milk price at the moment, is a serious concern for farmers."
