Cork dermatologists say Irish people should not be trying to get a sun tan.

New research by the dermatology department at South Infirmary Victoria Hospital and UCC finds that although people know the dangers of sunbathing and sunbeds, they're more interested in getting a tan.

Authors of the report are calling for people to protect themselves from the sun as skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Ireland.

Doctor Caitriona Gallagher who carried out the research while working as a Dermatology Specialist Registrar in Cork told RedFM News Irish people's skin is too fair for tanning:

"People know what they're supposed to do. They're just not doing it because they want to get a tan. So wearing sun cream, staying out of the sun from eleven to three, wearing clothes to cover up, a hat, so essentially, doing all of those things. and we can't sunbathe. Especially our Irish skin type. We cannot get a tan, and we should not be tanning."
