A Cork Garda has been awarded a medal for exceptional bravery after he arrested a man armed with a kitchen knife despite being stabbed several times.
Garda Tim McSweeney was stabbed in the arms on the 24th of March 2022 after responding to a call at a house in Douglas where he found a woman and children in fear of their lives.
He is one of eight members of the force to receive the Walter Scott medal today.
Garda McSweeney was badly injured during the struggle, but eventually subdued the man:
"It was just fear of him getting the knife off me and what he could do to the female and the children, if he did get the knife so that drove me to carry on, and every muscle my body to get him down on the ground, to get the knife off him."
