A Cork GP says more doctors and nurses are needed to cope with the expansion of the free GP Visit scheme.
The scheme was expanded to include over 200,000 additional people last week, and will bring in another 215,000 people in November.
The Irish College of General Practitioners are calling on the HSE to train more doctors and nurses for General Practice.
Speaking to RedFM News, President of the Irish College of General Practitioners and Cork GP Dr. Diarmuid Quilligan says they need to double the amount of GP nurses in Ireland:
"We're looking for an additional 2000 nurses in General practice. It's not a huge amount relative to the overall nursing employment within the country. But our 2000 GP nurses in general practice did 8 million consultations last year, our GP's did 21 million consultations. So we provide the bulk of health care that's delivered day to day across Ireland and across Cork."
