Improvement works undertaken by Cork City Council at a halting site could act as blueprint of success for other local authorities around the country.

Three years ago the Ombudsman for Children found conditions at the unnamed site, thought to be Spring Lane in Ballyvolane, as the worst in the country.

Since then the City Council has begun refurbishment and upgrading works and earlier this year an €18 million plan was agreed which will see the redevelopment of the site

Speaking to RedFM News Breda O'Donoghue of the Traveller Visibility Group has welcomed the improvements in the quality of life for people living at the site:

"We're hoping the report from the Ombudsman is the push the local authority needed in relation to developing that site and improving the living conditions for the families. It is complex, there are quite a lot of families up there and it's not going to be easy to get that done, but I suppose the fact that it's been started. We work closely with the local authority, watching the progress of the site as well."
