A Cork mum whose son died a day after being born at Cork University Maternity Hospital says she is heartbroken by the news that part of his brain was incinerated in Belgium along with clinical waste.
Annie's one day old son died at CUMH after being born with a bleed in his lung and brain in January last year.
Part of her son's brain was removed during a post mortem and the family agreed that it would be buried in the Garden of Angels, however Annie says she was contacted on Monday and told her family are one of 18 impacted by the incidents in March and April last year.
CUMH have apologised for the events, while Taoiseach Micheál Martin has described what happened as '"cruel and unacceptable."
Speaking to RedFM News, Annie says the revelation has left her struggling to understand why families like hers were not informed sooner.
"The only phonecall I ever received after my son's death was that the organ was disposed of.
"So in my mind all this time... they said it was Covid, and that it was disposed of.
"In my head and in my heart I Had it that he was in the Garden of Angels, like we consented.
"WE should have been told that when it happened - not now.
"The fact that one family knew... why haven't we been told sooner than this? We did we have to find out because it came to light?"
