Over 140 motorists have been arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving across the country in the past week.
Gardaí began a Christmas and New Year road safety campaign last Thursday and say the operation will continue until the 4th of January.
172 drivers have died on Irish roads since the start of the year- that’s 30 more deaths than this time last year and includes 12 road users in the city and county.
Speaking to RedFM News at a checkpoint in the city today Inspector Gillian Synnott from the Cork City Roads Policing Unit outlines the figures from the past week:
"So in the week date from the first of December, there have been 143 arrests in relation to drink and drug driving. 32 charges, 10 were under the limit and 41 alone were related to drunk driving arrests, and then the rest of them are gone for analysis in relation to a blood or urine specimen"
