The two women who died following a head on collision in Mallow on Mother's Day have been named locally.

64-year-old Mary Coughlan of Kingsquare in Mitchelstown was pronounced dead at the scene after the two car collision on the N72 at quarter to 4 on Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the other car, 41-year-old Susan O'Sullivan from Beechwood Park in Mallow was also pronounced dead at the scene and her two young children were taken to hospital to be treated for non life threatening injuries.

Speaking to RedFM News, Inspector of Road Policing for Cork County Fergal O'Donovan says 3 people have now been killed on Cork roads so far this year:

"My condolences to both families, traffic collisons do occur on it and there's been many fatalities on that road over the years. Again I would appeal to all road users to take care while they're driving on our roads in Cork county and always take a cautious approach while driving."
