549 people were registered as homeless in Cork last month

Nationally 14,760 people were accessing emergency accommodation - including more than 4,500 children.

It is yet another record for the numbers in emergency accommodation.

The total is 15 percent higher than September 2023 with figures showing the rate of increase registered as homeless is increasing again.

Speaking ahead of the release of the figures - Housing Minister, Darragh O’Brien, told RedFM News his department is working to prevent people from entering homelessness:

"One measure that we've taken that has been really successful is the purchase of homes with tenants in-situ, unsecured tenancies, HAP tenancies, where people who have been on the housing list, where the landlord is selling. Last year, we bought over eighteen hundred homes, we'll do over fifteen hundred at least this year and what that does is end an unsecure tenancy, converts a HAP tenancy into a social housing tenancy, and adds to our social housing stock"
