A 73-year-old man has been charged at Skibbereen District Court with the murder of a 54-year-old mother of three over 41 years ago.
Nora Sheehan, from Ballyphehane's body was found, dumped in Ship-pool wood in Innishannon, six days after she disappeared from outside the South Infirmary Hospital.
Noel Long, with an address at Maulbaun in Passage West was charged this morning at Skibbereen District Court with the murder of Nora Sheehan between the 6th and 12th of June 1981. Detective Inspector Eamonn Brady of Macroom Garda station said Long made no reply to the single charge of murder.
54 year old Nora Sheehan from Kilreendowney in Ballyphehane was the mother of three sons. She disappeared from outside the South Infirmary hospital at 9.45pm on the 6th of June 1981, after she had attended the hospital's emergency department for a dog bite on her arm.
Her body was found six days later by forestry workers 30 kilometers away near Inishannon. A post mortem revealed she died a violent death.
Almost six years ago, a Garda serious crime review investigator established that there was real potential to progress the investigation into her death, and her case was referred to a serious crime review team.
Long was remanded in custody and is to appear again before Clonakilty District Court next Tuesday.
