The 80th Anniversary of the Cork Harbour Tragedy is being marked today.

Five men died when two launch boats collided with the propellers of the Irish Poplar.

The ceremony will start with mass in St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh.

Relatives will then march to the monument on East Beach for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Secretary of the Cobh branch of the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel, Mick McCarthy describes what happened when tragedy struck in 1942:

"There was a blackout in the harbour so the only lights in the harbour would have been navigational aids. The pilot launch got alongside the Irish Poplar, and the pilot managed to scramble up the ladder. Before the pilot launch could get clear of the ship then, the port control launch came in and was lifted in on the wave and crashed against the pilot launch".
