A couple with a combined income of €107,000 would not be able to get on the property ladder in Cork

The Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland examined affordability of new homes found a Cork based garda and nurse would face a €13,000 shortfall

The report found that the affordability gap is widening despite the rising number of home completions

Joey Sheahan (pronounced Sheehan) of MyMortages.ie told RedFM News that a new plan to tackle the cost of building, rising property prices and lack of supply is needed

"A major issue here is the overall amount of supply throughout the country, so they need to look at that in conjunction with developers, councils, banks - all the stakeholders and see what can be done. The whole planning process, everything needs to be looked at to see how can this be made more straightforward and streamlined, which ultimately will result in more supply which will alleviate the pressure on house prices"
