Ukrainians fleeing Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv, feared Russian soldiers would shoot them as they attempted to leave the town, despite their assurances.
23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Kateryna Kopachova, who is now living in Buttevant, told RedFM News that, as she was trying to escape, she saw a line of cars which had been shot at, in which the bodies of whole families lay dead.
So far, scores of bodies have been found in Bucha following the withdrawal of Russian troops from the town.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described the killings there as “genocide”.
Russia denies any involvement in the atrocities and has suggested they were staged.
Speaking to RedFM News, Kateryna says families put signs on their cars displaying the words “Family” or “Kids-Don’t Shoot” to deter Russian troops from shooting at them as they attempted to escape
"Many people were killed when they tried to evacuate wit their families and people were putting letters on their cars like "Kids Don't Shoot" So we arrived by the line of cars that had been shot at and there were women and kids killed. The Russians don't care, they're killing everybody, big line of cars that had been shot at. We drove near to them and it was so scary, and was looking like it's a movie. It can't be real"
