An advocate for mother and baby home victims says the new redress scheme is unfair.

Carmel Cantwell’s brother died after he was born in Bessborough mother and baby home in the 1960’s.

Mothers who stayed in the institutions for more than one night and children who lived in the homes for more than 6 months can now apply for the scheme.

Speaking to RedFM News, Carmel Cantwell says there shouldn’t be conditons for the children who were born in mother and baby homes:

"I think it's a really unfair scheme. First of all, it eliminates or excludes 24,000 adoptees that were in the home less than six months. Ii mean, the trauma for an infant, it doesn't matter if you were taken from your mother at one day old or at six months old. Regarding my mother, all mothers are entitled to redress. Even if they spent one day there."
