The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors says the biggest problem with policing in Cork is a lack of frontline Gardaí.
Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM earlier today, Deputy General Secretary of the AGSI Ronan Clogher says the guards are having trouble recruiting and retaining members because it's no longer seen an attractive career:
"Big problem in County Cork is that the lack of frontline Gardaí. The Sergeants and Inspectors I have been talking to... that's what they tell me... We've no one on the ground, we've no one out on the streets giving the frontline service to the public and meeting the community. An Garda Síochána is simply not attractive anymore. Historically, the guards was a good job, it was paid reasonably well, there was a good pension. They had no problem getting some of the brightest and the best in the country to join the guards and see it as a career".
