An Auschwitz survivor who had lived in West Cork for nearly 40 years has died at the Mercy University Hospital
98-year old Walter Byokowski, who had been living near Drinagh with his wife Kathleen, died at the hospital on Saturday
The Echo reports that the couple had met in London, where Walter worked as an accountant for many years.
Walter who rarely spoke about his experience in the camp, had spent a number of years there and was known as prisoner 708
More than 1.1 million people died at Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945.
