An animal welfare charity in Cobh says it’s on high alert for illegal sulky races in Cork.

My Lovely Horse Rescue says racing young foals while attached to a sulky leaves them severely injured.

The races usually take place in the early hours of the morning with non microchipped horses so it’s difficult to trace the owners.

Speaking to RedFM News, Kelly Mellerick from My Lovely Horse Rescue in Cobh says these races need to be monitored by Gardaí:

"Well I would be hoping that more Gardaí come in on it, if they all got together and monitored the hot spots, and if they could intercept even before the race takes off."
