An animal welfare charity in Cobh says illegal sulky races are extremely dangerous for other road users.
My Lovely Horse Rescue is on high alert for races in Cork that could have foals as young as six months attached to a sulky.
The races take place early in the morning so anyone driving in the early hours could collide with a horse.
Speaking to RedFM News, Kelly Mellerick from My Lovely Horse says the horses often aren't microchipped which means owners can’t be tracked down:
"So unfortunately, in the cases of the impactions of cars, the poor car owner is reliant on their own car insurance, and sometimes their hospital bills and their own insurance and sometimes their hospital bills and their own injures which is a very unfair way and unjust way for things to be happening for the person who was injured in the collision."
