A large crowd gathered outside Micheál Martin’s office in Turner's Cross and delivered a letter calling on the government to intervene to increase payments to the CareChoice nursing home in the city.
The home says it will be forced to pull out of the Fair Deal scheme unless payment rates are increased, with prices expected to rise to around €1,300 a week if a deal cannot be reached.
Mark Kelleher’s 81 year old mother Maureen has dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Mark told RedFM News that the situation is very stressful:
A spokesperson for Tánaiste said CareChoice has chosen a “very political strategy designed to leverage results for itself” and said their actions have caused “upset and stress” for residents, their families and staff.
The statement went on to say that the government is committed to resolving these issues and are urging CareChoice to continue to engage with the National Treatment Purchase Fund.
