Bus and rail workers are AGAIN calling for a properly funded transport police - saying Cork also needs the new Garda division - because it's not just a Dublin problem.

It follows reports that a bus driver in Crosshaven was punched - when he refused to allow more passengers on-board than the legal capacity.

A homophobic attack on a young man on a Dublin Bus last weekend sparked outcry on social media.

The National Bus and Rail Union says anti-social behaviour has been a problem for years.

NBRU Assistant General Secretary Tom O'Connor says staff are also under threat - and not just in Dublin:

"We had a driver down in Crosshaven in Cork: too many people at the beach, too many trying to get on the bus. The driver ended up getting punched and taken the hospital. In Carrigaline in Cork, they broke the bus up with baseball bats. A female driver up in Navan was abused. We had a driver, four weeks ago, over in Galway, the assailant smashed the security screen and spend 40 minutes abusing him. The Gardaí eventually came and got him".
