Bus Éireann has issued a statement on the school transport scheme which is operate on behalf of the Department of Education.
The statement was issued on foot of 12 students from Glenville who don't have a school bus ticket to get to St. Colman's College in Fermoy.
Bus Eireann say the aim of the scheme is to provide transport for children living remotely from their nearest school and so far this year over 133,000 tickets have been issued to students travelling on mainstream services. Across county Cork, there has been a 7% increase in tickets issued to eligible and concessionary pupils compared to this time last year.
Concessionary seats are not guaranteed every year and can only be offered where there are spare seats on an existing school transport service.
Children are eligible at post-primary level where they reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are attending their nearest post-primary school/education centre as determined by the Department and Bus Éireann
