A change in wind direction at 4am meant the tide peaked at 2.6 metres rather than the expected 2.8
100 council staff were on call this morning to assist with any clean up.
A status Orange wind warning for Cork has now expired and all streets have reopened.
Coastal towns also survived the worst of the weather, however there was some flooding in the square in Bantry earlier this morning.
Director of Services with Cork City Council David Joyce says there were some roads affected but nothing too major:
"All businesses in the city centre will be able to open on time and Cork City will be open today for Christmas shopping/. We've avoided the crisis as I've said there was a number of roads that were badly affected this morning, where you had four lane roads go to one way and we're very grateful for the Gardaí for the assistance they gave in relation to managing the traffic."
