Cabinet is expected to sign off on recommendations to transform the country's current rail system today.
The All Island Strategic Rail Review suggests electrification, faster speeds, improved frequency, and new routes.
It outlines a number of enhancements to the rail system, particularly in the West and North of the country.
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan says he'll be talking to businesses about bringing back rail freight:
"I'll be going with the message, do you want to switch to real freight because that's low carbon? And in a world that's burning, in the world where people in Rhodes and Corfu are having to flee their hotels. It's important we start to have low carbon solutions, and the report sets out some of those."
