Calls are being made for free public transport to be implemented in Cork.

Councillors and representatives in the City are suggesting that free travel would be a starting point to reducing emissions and traffic.

The Labour party expect traffic to become more problematic for Cork when students return to school in September and with the current easing of restrictions.

The Party wrote to the head of the National Transport Authority and the Minister for Transport suggesting thar offering free bus and train services for school children in Cork City could be a start in tackling climate change.

Speaking to RedFM News, Cork Labour Councillor John Maher says free transport could be a step in the right direction:

"We're asking for Cork city to be used as a trial, as a trial city also by doing this, we're changing our culture, by giving free transport to young people, and we're telling them and we're showing them that public transport can work and we're reducing emissions, and as a result, it's friendly to our environment, we're reducing traffic. And I think that that's a better way to go forward with the climate challenges that we face."
