Independent councillor Kieran McCarthy is to urge the City Council to address subsidence along the quay wall along French’s Quay in particular as he is concerned that the damage will only get worse when construction begins on the planned event centre.

This week the Cabinet allocated a further €7m to the long awaited event centre which is planned for the former Beamish and Crawford site on South Main Street.

Cllr McCarthy says many of the city’s quays are damaged as the tide come in twice a day and takes away mortar, and there is now an urgent need to repair them.

The Council says they're aware of the subsidence at French’s Quay. and are currently assessing it with a view to determining what temporary works are required in the short term to avoid further deterioration ahead of the planned repair and strengthening works which are due to take place later this year.

Speaking to RedFM News Cllr McCarthy says no work can start on the Events Centre if the wall at French's Quay is under pressure:

"I'm calling on the city council to address this as soon as possible, in particular, because I suppose what was announced last week is that like the Event Centre construction is supposed to begin with its foundations being put in towards the end of the year. So that sort of hard engineering will have a knock on effect on all the quay walls in the areas we just need to mind those quay walls in particular in that area because the river as well actually sweeps around by the Metamora boating centre as well as because we just need to mind those historic spaces."
