Calls have been made for new speed camera technology to be rolled out across Cork

Cameras that register number plates and automatically award points will be installed along Dublin's busiest junctions and along bus lanes within the first half of this year

These automatic 'red-light' cameras will be used to catch motorists who break red lights, block yellow boxes or illegally use bus lanes

Independent Councillor for West Cork Finbarr Harrington believes the new technology would be more effective than speed limit reductions or speed vans.

"What they do is they catch a person in one split second of a moment when you're driving along and you're five or six kilometres an hour over the speed limit - your caught. The new smart cameras if you come to the camera and you're speeding, and you look at your speed and you realize, "I gotta slow down here, I'm going a little bit fast" That then drifts into your psyche and when you're driving, and it changes people's attitude towards speeding"
