Cork City Coroner’s court has heard calls for more to be done to prevent cars from entering the water off a working quay in Cork.
Coroner Philip Comyn said there have been thirteen incidents involving a car driving into the water from the unprotected Kennedy Quay since 2018
Today’s inquest dealt with the death of a 35-year-old man whose car entered the water at Kennedy Quay in March this year.
A statement by Garda Richard Caverly read into the record by Sgt Aisling Murphy said dive crews had to cancel attempts to reach the car to recover the man’s body due to a rowing event.
Garda Caverly’s statement said the Fire Service had to physically force the rowers from the area.
Coroner Philip Comyn said there had been 6 suicides, 6 attempted suicides and one murder involving cars entering the water from the quay since 2018.
He called on those responsible for the quay- whether it be the Port of Cork or the City Council- to come up with a plan to prevent future incidents and implement it without further delay.
