A special school in the city needs urgent investment to ensure students are given the best possible education.

That's according to Cork Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire who is calling on the Education Minister to prioritise the construction of a new building for St Gabriel's Special School in Bishopstown.

Parents and staff have been highlighting the situation for years and have described the almost 40 year old building as essentially 'derelict'.

Around 40 students with severe learning difficulties are enrolled at the school.

Speaking to RedFM News, Sinn Féin's spokesperson on Justice and Equality Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire says he will be writing to Minister Joe McHugh.

"There is incredible work going on there, but the condition of the building it was never really fully fit for purpose, but over the course of recent years it has become even less so.

"So I'm calling on the Minister for Education to ensure that the planning and development of the new school is expedited as soon as possible, and I will be following up in writing with them in relation to that."
