Calls have been made for a State apology for the Whiddy Island disaster which claimed the lives of 51 people in 1979.
Independent TD Michael Collins said the families of the victims have been left with many unanswered questions and deserve an apology from the State.
The families claim that a number of critical safety and regulatory breaches lead to the explosion of a French oil tanker at the offshore jetty in Bantry Bay.
The calls come after a documentary on the disaster called Fire In The Sky, aired on RTE Radio over the weekend.
Michael Kingston's father Tim was one of the victims of the disaster and he told RedFM News that he is spearheading a High Court application on behalf of the victims families to have the coroners' verdicts quashed.
"the death certificates state the physical cause of death, in my father's case 'accidental drowning', when in fact they should state 'unlawful death due to breaches of Irish regulation'.
"There has been no engagement with the Government, so therefore we're bringing an action to have the death certificates rectified.
"We are left with no option but to bring this action to establish unlawful death, and we will call on the back of that for a root and branch review of Irish maritime regulation."
