A member of an adoption support group in Cork says he can only offer a "cautious" welcome to a new law providing compensation to Mother and Baby Home survivors.
President Michael D Higgins signed the Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme Bill into law yesterday morning.
The law will allow people to apply for compensation on their own behalf, or on behalf of a relative who may be living or dead.
A woman or girl who spent at least one night in a mother and baby home for pregnancy related reasons will be eligible for compensation...
However children must have spent over six months in a home.
Speaking to RedFM News, Tom Walsh from Know My Own says it's not right that some children are left out.
"From that point of view, the proposal is extremely discriminatory, and cuts out quite a lot of people who were in the homes for shorter than 6 months.
"Because they were there for shorter than six months, they can claim nothing.
"I would welcome it [the bill], in the sense that it indicates a slight recognition of a problem, but it doesn't even start to inch towards fixing the problem."
