CCTV installed in known dumping spots across Cork can still not be used by the County Council to catch illegal dumpers due to data protection concerns.
An act was passed last year providing for the GDPR-compliant use of CCTV for waste-enforcement purposes however local authorities are still not able to use the technology.
The Local Government Management Agency is required to submit draft codes of practice to the Minister to set standards for the operation of CCTV and once that is approved it can then be used.
37 cameras were installed across Cork county three years ago in a bid to crackdown on litter louts and there is widespread frustration that this technology still cannot be used to catch illegal dumpers.
